Welcome to the summer issue of the Charles University Alumni Club Newsletter.

First of all, we would like to invite you to the annual Charles University Garden Celebration in the Wallenstein Garden on June 21. Further, you are welcome to visit the exquisite Amazon River exhibition in Carolinum: it is available both on-site and online. And last but not least, you may read the latest news about Charles University achievements in politics, literature, and international cooperation in this issue.

Garden Celebration

Monday, June 21 @ 6 pm

We would like to invite all Charles University employees and members of the CU Alumni Club to the traditional summer Garden Celebration that will take place in the Wallenstein Garden on June 21st at 6 p.m. The event will be accompanied by Ondřej Ruml music.

Belarusian leader in Carolinum

Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya visited the CU during her four-day visit to the Czech Republic. She and her team met for talks at Charles University to discuss student opportunities and to support democracy in Belarus.

Amazon River Exhibition

Online tour available

You are welcome to take a virtual tour of the Amazon River exhibition in the Carolinum building. The exhibition was arranged by Bohumír Janský, the professor at Charles University Faculty of Science, and shows the achievements of Czech scientists while discovering the Amazon River.

Book Award to Hilský

Shakespeare's England: Portrait of an Age

The main prize at the Magnesia Litera Awards for 2021 went to Martin Hilský for his work Shakespeare's England – Portrait of an Age. Martin Hilský is Professor emeritus of English Literature at the CU Faculty of Arts and a prominent translator of Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets into Czech. His latest work is a fascinating and extensively researched book with a deep insight into Shakespeare’s work.

Coimbra Group General Assembly

Annual Conference

This year, the Coimbra Group Annual Conference is hosted by Charles University. The Coimbra Group brings together 41 universities from 23 countries. Among the main topics of the conference, Coimbra Group will discuss sustainability, post-pandemic cooperation, and help for students.

4EU+ Funding Opportunities

4EU+ Alliance

Last month, the rectors of the 4EU+ Alliance established a new legal entity. Based in Heidelberg, the association aims to strengthen cooperation among all six member universities. The Alliance brings new opportunities to junior researchers.

MFF Beer „πvO“

Charles University Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Research Institute of Brewing and Malting, and Ferdinand Brewery launched its own beer brand Pěkný číslo(referring to the number π in Czech). Cheers!

Alumni Meetup – Austria 2021

Thursday, July 15 @ 4 pm

In cooperation with Czech Embassy in Vienna, the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research will host the first alumni meetup event organized by the Czech Republic Alumni programme. The event is open to all international alumni who studied in the Czech Republic and either come from or live in Austria. Registration is open until July 2 noon CEST.
