Dear International Students,

Our Alma Mater is celebrating its 673rd anniversary! Charles University was established in 1348 by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV., making it one of the oldest universities in Europe in continuous operation. Despite the current pandemic obstacles and challenges, we wish CU many more years and successful students to come! We are glad that YOU are part of the CU story!

This newsletter is packed with invitations to several events, ranging from sports to presentation skills. We have also included our tips for online cultural events that you may join! Although this year the traditional Rector’s Sports Day will not be able to take place, on May 12, you may enjoy a rector’s leave and a day off outdoors. Also, remember to follow CU on social media.

We hope that you will enjoy reading this issue. Have a wonderful springtime!

May 1 – Labour Day / May Day

In the Czech Republic, May 1 is a public holiday and it is celebrated as the Labour day as well as the day to celebrate love. In Prague, many couples head to the Petřín hill and kiss under a blooming cherry tree. Tradition says that a girl who is kissed under a blossoming tree will stay beautiful all year round. In Petřín you can also find the statue of the famous 19th-century Czech poet, Karel Hynek Mácha, who wrote the poem Máj (May), which tells the tragic story of two lovers and is considered a masterpiece of the Czech Romantic period. The poem is continuously in print and often memorised and recited by pupils at schools. In cities, students organise Majáles - a celebration of students’ life.
