CU Point – Services and information in one place

December 2022

Dear International Students,

Advent is here, which means St. Nicolas is just around the corner, and Christmas is on the horizon. Markets and shiny trees are in the squares, all lighted up. An evening stroll through the city suddenly became a truly magical experience. Many of you are surely planning a trip home to see your families, friends. Therefore, we wish you a safe travel and a peaceful holiday. May your days be merry and bright! (Crosby et al. 1942)1.

And see you back at CU!

Going native

Christmas #czechedition

During Advent, all Czechs bake a plaited sweet bread called Vánočka and all sorts of other Christmas candy and cookies quite unique to Central Europe. At the same time, Filipovka (Nativity Fast) is being held by some. This fasting should be interrupted only with foods like Hubník or Kuba. Everything then culminates with a Christmas Eve feast, usually consisting of a potato salad and fried carp. During the entire dinner, remember not to get up from the table in order to stay alive, says the tradition. 😅 Afterwards, it's finally the present time! Just before midnight, Czechs often go outside to send some walnut shells with tiny candles floating on a nearby river. The day ends in a church with the famous Jan Jakub Ryba's Czech Christmas Mass.
