During Advent, all Czechs bake a plaited sweet bread called Vánočka and all sorts of other Christmas candy and cookies quite unique to Central Europe. At the same time, Filipovka (Nativity Fast) is being held by some. This fasting should be interrupted only with foods like Hubník or Kuba. Everything then culminates with a Christmas Eve feast, usually consisting of a potato salad and fried carp. During the entire dinner, remember not to get up from the table in order to stay alive, says the tradition. 😅 Afterwards, it's finally the present time! Just before midnight, Czechs often go outside to send some walnut shells with tiny candles floating on a nearby river. The day ends in a church with the famous Jan Jakub Ryba's Czech Christmas Mass. |
